What Is AIEO and How Is It Different From Traditional SEO?

AI Engine Optimization is the newest acronym in marketing. Here's what it means, how it overlaps with SEO, and what's genuinely different.

AIEOSEOAI Search

AIEO — AI Engine Optimization — is one of those terms that showed up fast and gets thrown around loosely. Some agencies use it to describe anything vaguely related to AI. I want to be specific about what it means, because the specificity is what makes it useful.

AIEO is the practice of making sure your business shows up, accurately, when someone asks an AI tool like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overview for a recommendation. That’s it. It’s not a replacement for SEO — it’s a set of practices layered on top of solid SEO work, aimed at a different kind of search behavior.

How it overlaps with SEO

Most of what makes a site good for AIEO is also good for traditional SEO: fast page speed, clean site structure, content that clearly answers real questions, accurate and consistent business information. If your SEO foundation is weak, your AIEO is weak too, because AI tools are largely drawing from the same indexed web that Google search ranks.

This is why I don’t sell AIEO as a separate service. It’s built into the SEO & AI Search work I do for every client — the two are too intertwined to separate cleanly.

Where it genuinely differs

A few things matter more for AIEO than they do for classic SEO:

Structured data becomes non-negotiable. Schema markup — the behind-the-scenes code that labels who you are, what you do, your service area, your reviews — helps AI tools understand your business with confidence instead of piecing it together from unstructured text. A site with strong schema is handing the AI model an answer key.

Direct, complete answers beat keyword optimization. Traditional SEO content sometimes gets written around a keyword, with the actual answer buried in paragraph three. AI models favor content that states the answer clearly, early, and completely — the kind of writing that could be lifted and quoted directly without editing.

Third-party consistency matters more. AI tools cross-reference what you say about your business against what’s said about you elsewhere — reviews, directories, press mentions. If your own site claims something your review profile contradicts, that inconsistency can quietly undercut your visibility in AI-generated answers.

Being citable matters, not just being ranked. Ranking #1 on Google doesn’t guarantee an AI model quotes you in its answer. Content that’s structured, specific, and easy to extract a clean answer from gets pulled into AI responses more often than content that ranks well but reads vague.

What I do differently for AIEO

When I take on SEO work now, I add a specific layer: auditing schema completeness, checking how the business’s core facts read across every platform (not just the website), and rewriting key pages so the actual answer to the visitor’s likely question appears clearly near the top, not buried under scene-setting. None of this replaces the technical SEO and content work that’s always mattered — it’s additive.

I also test it directly. Part of an AIEO audit is literally asking ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overview the questions a prospective customer would ask, and seeing whether the client shows up. It’s a blunt but effective way to know where you stand, rather than guessing from theory.

FAQ

Do I need to buy AIEO as a separate service from SEO? No — if an agency is selling AIEO with no SEO foundation underneath it, be skeptical. The two should be handled together.

How do I check if AI tools are recommending my business right now? Ask ChatGPT, Claude, and Google’s AI Overview a few realistic questions a customer might ask, using your city and service. See who comes up and who doesn’t.

Does schema markup guarantee I’ll be recommended by AI tools? No guarantee, but it significantly improves the odds by giving AI models clean, structured facts to work with instead of forcing them to interpret unstructured page content.

Is AIEO worth investing in for a small local business? Yes, especially if your customers research vendors before buying — which covers most service businesses and B2B companies. The investment is mostly foundational work you should be doing anyway.
